Things You Should Know About Silver Jewellery

Silver jewellery is something that never goes out of fashion. Silver jewellery has the charisma of elegance and serene beauty. It has always been a popular choice in jewellery and other decor pieces. If you are someone who has an eye for silver jewellery and is always ready to add more items to your jewellery box, you must know some things related to silver jewellery.

The types of jewellery

  • Fine Silver: Fine silver is a very pure form of silver, containing 99.9% of the metal. This purity is indicated by the stamp “999” that is often found on fine silver jewelry. However, fine silver is also very soft, which makes it difficult to work with and prone to damage. As a result, it is not often used in jewelry. When it is used, fine silver is often hammered or brushed to help mask the evidence of wear over time.
  • Sterling Silver: Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and another metal, usually copper. It contains 92.5% silver, which gives it a beautiful shine and makes it relatively soft. The remaining 7.5% is made up of the other metal, which helps to make sterling silver more durable and tarnish-resistant.
  • Silver Plate: Silver-plated jewelry is made by coating a base metal, such as copper, with a thin layer of silver. The thickness of the silver plating can vary, but it is typically very thin. This means that silver-plated jewelry is not actually made of silver, but rather a base metal with a silver coating.

Maintain your jewellery

You need to be extra careful with your silver jewellery as they are prone to get discoloured.  It should be stored in a dry and dark place away from the exposure of air and water. It is advised to prevent them from getting into contact with chlorine as well. However if your silver jewellery has been tarnished you can clean it by using anti-tarnish liquids and soft cloth.

By keeping them clean and dust free, you can make them last shiny and news looking for  a longer time. Silver jewellery can be cleaned by using silver polishes, but other than this there are some home remedies which are also a great method to clean them such as – warm water and soap, toothpaste, baking powder, or vinegar.

Silver Allergies

One of the reasons sterling silver is so popular is that most allergy sufferers can wear it without having an allergic reaction. Nickel-free metals such as silver are generally considered hypoallergenic. However, there is a small exception to this rule. Sterling silver has also been found to contain 7.5% other metals. The most common is 7.5% copper and no nickel. However, if the remaining 7.5% is made of metal that is not nickel-free, the jewelry may cause an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can cause the skin to become red and itchy. To avoid this, it’s best to choose sterling silver jewelry, which has the lowest risk of allergic reactions.

How to style your  jewellery

Silver jewelry is beautiful in and of itself, but there are ways to style it so that it always looks fresh and new. For example, layering jewelry is a big trend in the beauty world. Mix and match long and short necklaces for a sharp and sophisticated look. You can also complement flashy silver with more understated items. Try wearing a small ring to support your large hoop earrings to stand out and complete the look. You can also combine the silver chain with different pendants and stones to create new looks again and again.
